The First Professional Association in Arkansas

The Arkansas Press Association was founded in 1873 to serve Arkansas and its weekly and daily newspapers. There are 104 weekly and 33 daily newspaper members, all the legal newspapers in the state. In addition, there are more than 160 Associate Members--suppliers, manufacturers, educators, individuals, media, etc. The APA, whose motto is "Free Press, Free People," is the oldest professional association in Arkansas.

The non-profit APA has two affiliates, Arkansas Press Services, Inc. and the Arkansas Newspaper Foundation. APS offers several important services to the public. The Foundation provides funds for scholarships, other educational programs and the Arkansas Newspaper Museum.

The primary function of APA is to serve its member newspapers by providing to them the information and education opportunities to grow, develop and compete in the marketplace. APA serves the public by helping protect basic freedoms of press, speech, public access to government and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

APA conducts an annual convention (Summer), an annual advertising conference and numerous workshops and seminars during the year. It is active in legislative matters which concern areas of interest to both newspapers and the general public.

Publications include a newsletter that is distributed every Thursday, The Arkansas Publisher Weekly; a quarterly magazine, The Arkansas Publisher; a quarterly NIE Newsletter, NIE Chalkboard; an annual Arkansas Media Directory; Ad News, a monthly newsletter for newspaper advertising managers; Classified Marketplace, a weekly job bank listing for publishers, and a Legislative Alerts bulletin.

Other member services include conducting two Better Newspaper Contests, an annual trade show, advisory resources on issues such as postal, taxes, FOIA, HIPAA, libel, etc.; and providing a member-contact Buyer-Sellers Guide, placement service and internship program
