The Arkansas Press Association was founded in 1873 to serve the newspapers of Arkansas. The primary function of APA is to serve its member newspapers by providing to them information and training opportunities to allow them to grow, develop and compete in the marketplace.

Paul Combs’s editorial cartoon is reproduced with permission from the 2007 Sunshine Week materials.In cooperation with Governor of Arkansas Mike Beebe, Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel and the Arkansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), APA has just produced the 13th Edition of its semi-annual publication, The Freedom of Information Handbook. Other sponsors include the Arkansas Broadcasters Association, Associated Press Managing Editors and Associated Press Broadcasters Association.

More than 24,000 copies were printed this year so that the book could be readily available to public officials, legislators, court employees, school boards, judges, journalists, concerned citizens and advocates of open government and public accountability. New rules and entry forms for the 2009 APA Better Newspaper Advertising Contest were sent to all member newspapers on Dec 8. All entries must be submitted by Jan. 31, 2009.

Photo Contest Finalists announced Dec. 15

The 12 finalists in the Cover Photo Contest for the 2009 Arkansas Media Directory were announced December 15 in the APA Forums.

Entry deadline for Advertising Contest is Jan. 31

As it is every year, the deadline for entering the 2009 Better Newspaper Advertising Contest is January 31. As that date falls on a Saturday next year, those wishing to compete will have two extra days: all submissions must be received at the APA headquarters by 5:00 p.m., February 2, 2009.
