More about Arkansas Newspaper in Education

What is NIE?
Hundreds of newspapers across the US and around the world offer Newspaper in Education (NIE) programs. Newspapers are used in classes as a teaching tool at all grade levels and in all subject areas. The Arkansas Press Association is proud to be part of this exciting learning experience.

The Arkansas Press Association NIE program provides Arkansas schools and other educational settings with newspapers and educational materials that enhance learning through real-life experiences relevant to students' daily lives. Teachers, parents, and students are provided with hands-on learning activities, innovative ideas, and curriculum activities that turn the newspaper into a multipurpose resource. This living textbook is filled with up-to-date information and motivating activities relevant for every grade level.Mission Statement
The ArkansasPress Association's NIE programs are dedicated to promoting literacy by providing educators with materials which assist in teaching reading, writing and thinking skills through the use of the newspaper.

Program Goals
APA's Newspaper in Education programs offer students the opportunity to develop:

  • a better understanding of their local community and the world around them.
  • an appreciation of their community and its quality of life.
  • an understanding of their own values and feelings about the community in which they live.
  • an awareness of the importance of the local newspaper as a continuous source of information about their community and the world around them.
  • skills in decision-making and problem-solving.
  • basic skills through a variety of reading, writing, and research activities.
